Friction Restore

ANONYMOUS CART PERSISTENCE FOR SHOPIFY

Anonymous carts disappear.
Bring them back.

Keep guest carts saved beyond the browser session. Friction Restore stores a separate copy and brings available items back when a recognized guest returns to an empty cart, so they can continue the purchase without rebuilding it.

No popups. No email capture. No visible storefront changes.

Illustrative cart. Restoration requires a recognized guest, an empty current cart, and available saved items.

The problem

They came back to buy. Their cart didn’t.

A guest chooses products, leaves to think, and returns ready to continue. An empty cart means finding those products again, choosing variants again, and starting over. Some shoppers do the work. Others leave the purchase behind.

A GUEST CHOOSES PRODUCTSThen comes back another day.
Without persistent guest cart storageAn empty cart. A fresh start. When the native cart is gone, the shopper has to rebuild their choices. The extra work can interrupt a purchase they were ready to continue.
With Friction RestoreTheir saved cart is ready to review. On an eligible return, available items come back to the existing cart. The shopper can continue, edit their selections, and check out.

The forgotten extras

The main item is memorable. The extras are easier to miss.

A shopper may remember the camera. The spare battery, memory card, and strap are easier to leave behind. When they rebuild from memory, the main purchase may still happen with fewer extras.

Why carts disappear

The browser and Shopify run on different clocks.

An anonymous cart relies on stored cart data and a way to reconnect the returning browser to it. Cookies can expire, browser storage can be cleared, and the underlying cart can reach its own limit. A saved selection today is not a promise that the native cart will still be there later.

7 days

Browser storage limits

WebKit describes deleting affected script-written storage after seven days without site interaction. This can remove the browser data used to remember a visit.
2 weeks

The cart cookie

Shopify lists its storefront cart cookie at two weeks. The cookie helps connect a browser to its cart; its lifespan is separate from the stored cart itself.
30 days

The stored cart

Shopify documents unused Storefront API carts expiring within 30 days of creation. This API limit describes the cart record, not a universal timer for every storefront.
A separate copy gives the cart another way back.

Restore saves cart contents on our servers and checks for an eligible returning guest. If the current cart is empty, available saved items can return even when the native cart is gone. A recognized guest can pick up saved selections weeks or months later. Recognition, saved-cart availability, and item availability still determine whether a cart can be restored.

How Restore works

Save the cart. Restore their progress.

Restore saves the guest’s items, variants, and quantities on our servers. When an eligible guest returns to an empty cart, available items come back at current Shopify prices. They can pick up the purchase, with the accessories and add-ons they had already selected.

01

Save

The guest’s cart is saved on our servers, including items, selected variants, and quantities.

02

Recognize

Device fingerprinting helps match an eligible return on the same browser or device.

03

Restore

If the current cart is empty, available items return at current Shopify prices.

Returning weeks or months later? Shoppers can still pick up their saved selections when Restore recognizes them and those items remain available.

The storefront experience

Your storefront stays yours.

Restore works in the background of your existing cart. Shoppers see the available products and extras they selected, without a popup, email form, or extra checkout step.

What will Restore cost your store?

ROI calculator

A cart brought back. Two ways it can pay off.

An empty cart can cost you a whole purchase, or just the smaller items in it. Estimate each outcome separately, then see the potential contribution after the app fee.

1. A purchase that might have been lost

A shopper returns to an empty cart and gives up on rebuilding it. When Restore brings their selections back, they may continue to checkout. Count the full order value for purchases you believe restoration enabled.

2. Extras that might have been forgotten

Another shopper would buy the main product even if their cart disappeared. But while rebuilding it, they might forget the accessories or add-ons they chose earlier. Restoring those selections can keep the extras in the eventual order. Count only their extra value here.

02 / Extras kept

For example: 20 orders that keep $20 of otherwise forgotten extras = $400 in add-on sales per month. Exclude extras from the additional purchases above—their full order value is already counted. Set this slider to $0 to leave extras out.

Your assumptions, not measured uplift. Extra purchases include their full order value. The add-on estimate counts only extras on purchases where the shopper would still buy the main product without Restore. Returns and other costs are not included.

Billing: USD. Recurring and usage charges are billed every 30 days. Paid overage must be enabled to continue beyond the plan allowance.

Built for the return visit

Good purchases don’t always happen in one visit.

Some shoppers need time. Others need to get the details right. Keep their selections ready when they come back to continue.

01 / Time to compare

Let them think it over.

A sofa, a camera, a piece of equipment. When they return after comparing options, their available saved items are ready to review.

Useful for considered purchases
02 / A complete setup

Keep the choices together.

The right variant, the matching accessories, the quantities they worked out. Restore brings the available selection back as a cart they can edit.

Useful for carts with several items
03 / A better moment

Make picking it up easier.

They paused to check a measurement, ask someone, or make time. When a recognized guest returns to an empty cart, they can continue from their saved choices.

Useful when buying takes more than one visit

Product questions

Your questions about Restore, answered.

What is anonymous cart persistence?

A guest can add products without logging in, then return after the native cart or its browser data is gone. Restore keeps a separate server-side copy and brings available items back when that guest is safely recognized and their current cart is empty. They can resume the purchase without rebuilding their selections or sharing an email.

How can bringing a cart back help the purchase?

An empty cart adds work between a returning shopper and checkout. Bringing saved items back makes it easier to continue. Some purchases that would have been abandoned may go ahead; shoppers who would buy anyway can also keep the accessories and add-ons they might otherwise forget. Restore brings back items already selected rather than creating new upsells.

How does the ROI calculator work?

Use the ROI calculator’s own monthly visits slider; it automatically compares the listed paid plans, including plans with enough allowance and plans with overage, to find the lowest estimated app fee. Estimate purchases that would otherwise be lost, at their full order value. Separately estimate forgotten add-ons retained on orders where the main product would still be bought: for example, 20 orders keeping $20 of extras means $400 per month. Exclude add-ons from the additional purchases, since those orders are already counted in full. Apply your gross margin and subtract the app fee. The pricing calculator has separate inputs. These are your assumptions, not measured revenue or AOV uplift; restored-cart reports alone do not establish what shoppers would have bought without restoration.

Does a Shopify cart always last 7 or 30 days?

There is no single browser-wide rule. Shopify's Storefront API documentation says unused and abandoned carts expire within 30 days of creation; its cookie policy separately lists the storefront cart cookie at two weeks. WebKit describes a seven-day limit on affected browser storage without site interaction. These cover different mechanisms, so do not assume each edit gives every cart another 30 days. The Restore product page links to these sources in its cart-expiry explanation.

Does Restore work without a customer account or email?

Yes. Restore is built for anonymous guest shoppers. It saves their cart and brings eligible items back when they return to an empty cart and can be safely matched. They do not need to log in, share an email, or click a restore button.

Will shoppers see a popup or a new cart interface?

No. Restore works in the background. Eligible items return to the store's existing cart, with no popup, email capture, promotional message, or additional shopper step.

Does Restore change my theme or checkout?

Turn on Restore in your Shopify theme editor; you don't need to edit theme code. Saved items return to your existing cart. Checkout, payments, shipping, and taxes stay with Shopify. Test your cart during setup, especially if you use a custom theme or cart drawer.

Does it restore every cart?

No. Restore needs to recognize the guest, find an available saved cart, and confirm the current cart is empty. Only available items can return, at current Shopify prices. A safe match can allow restoration weeks or months later.
